Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a broad field of computer science focused on building machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This includes problem-solving, decision-making, learning, perception (e.g., image recognition and natural language understanding. AI encompasses various subfields such as Machine Learning (ML), Computer Vision, Robotics, and Natural Language Processing (NLP).
When thinking about AI in education, and instructional design in particular, it is important to distinguish between the field of AI, and the subset of AI known as Large Language Models (LLMs).
Large Language Models (LLMs)
Large Language Models (LLMs) are a subset of AI, specifically focused on natural language processing (NLP). LLMs like GPT-4 are designed to understand, generate, and interact with human language based on vast amounts of textual data. LLMs use deep learning techniques, particularly transformer architectures (GPT stands for Generative Pre-Trained Transformer), to predict the next word in a sequence, allowing them to generate coherent and contextually relevant text. These models do not “understand” language in a human sense but are capable of sophisticated text generation through pattern recognition in the data they’ve been trained on.
Implications for Instructional Design
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming instructional design by enhancing personalization, content delivery, and assessment. AI-driven tools like machine learning and natural language processing allow instructional designers to tailor educational materials to individual learner needs, providing real-time support and instant feedback through chatbots and virtual assistants. These tools optimize engagement, knowledge retention, and help designers make data-driven decisions. AI can also streamline content creation, improve learner experiences, and assist with brainstorming and content generation. While AI enhances productivity, it is not expected to replace instructional designers but rather complement their work.
